The mission of POCIS-NE is to support people of color who work in independent schools in New England. Through annual activities and events POCIS-NE seeks to:

  • Provide advocacy and encouragement for POC, including staff, faculty, and administration
  • Promote mentoring among POC across schools
  • Provide and promote opportunities for professional development
  • Enhance the experience of POC in independent schools through development of community
  • Facilitate opportunities for professional collaboration
  • Facilitate communication among POC in independent schools in New England

Lavette Coney serves as the Co-Chair of The English Language Learning Department at The Fessenden School in West Newton, MA, where she also is a member of the upper school faculty. She holds degrees from Columbia University (Tokyo/NY) and University of Massachusetts - Boston. As a member of the residential faculty, she feels at home living on campus and loves to read and present at various workshops and conferences. 

Justin McLean serves as the Head of Middle School at The Meadowbrook School of Weston. Previously he served as Meadowbrook's Director of Multicultural Affairs for ten years. He has earned degrees from Columbia University (NY) and Boston College before beginning a career in independent schools as an intern at the Fenn School in Concord, MA. A self-described "school person", he lives in Brookline, MA and loves everything about DC sports.

Jason Singleton serves as the Middle School Director at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. Previously, he was the Upper School Dean of Students and Science Department Chair at The Fessenden School; and the Co-Director of the Middle School at Laurel School for Girls. He holds a M.B.A. from Averett University (VA) and B.S. in Natural Science/Chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Jason is an avid college football and basketball fan.

Johára Tucker is the Director of Equity and Inclusion Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA. She received her B.A from Wesleyan University and and a J.D from New York Law School. Before coming to Worcester Academy Ms.Tucker was the Director of Social Justice & Multicultural Programming at The Cambridge School of Weston. Before that she was the Assistant Dean of Students for Community Life at Pomfret School, where she also taught and was a dorm parent. Johára is also a doing research on retention levels for faculty of color in Independent School. She spends any spare time traveling and blogging.
